How Reelt calculates your disposable income

Reelt is built to give you a documented overview of your finances. Here we explain how the system works, and why you can trust the numbers.

Data quality before results

Before we show a number, we check your data. You get a status that tells you whether your data can be used:

  • Green: Everything looks good. Data is ready for calculation.
  • Yellow: There are warnings. You can continue, but the result may be inaccurate.
  • Red: Data cannot be used. There are errors that need to be fixed.

This check ensures you never get a number you can't trust.

A calculation you can follow

Reelt calculates disposable income from your transactions using fixed arithmetic rules:

The same data and categories produce the same result. You can trace amounts back to transactions and correct the information before purchase.

  • Deposits are summed from positive transactions
  • Fixed expenses are identified from repetitions
  • Disposable income = deposits minus fixed expenses

Periods: month vs. pay cycle

You can choose how your data is grouped:

  • Calendar month: Transactions from the 1st to the last day of the month. Matches bills.
  • Pay period: Transactions from payday to payday. Gives a more realistic picture of your daily life.

Reelt gives you both options, so you can choose the perspective that fits your situation.

Frequently asked questions

Reelt adds up inflows and subtracts fixed costs. Variable spending is then subtracted to show net. You can review transactions and categories before purchase. Document reading and automatic explanations are described on the data handling page.

Most users are done in under 5 minutes. Upload your bank statements, specify your household type, and see your disposable income immediately.

The data quality indicator shows whether your data can be used for calculation. Green means everything is fine. Yellow means there are warnings. Red means there are errors that need to be fixed.

You can follow the calculation and check the transactions behind the figures. The same data and categories produce the same result. Review any warnings and check that all relevant accounts are included.

Calendar month groups transactions from the 1st to the last day of the month. Pay period groups from payday to payday. Pay period better matches how most people experience their finances in everyday life.
